The Kansas high school football rankings could look much different this time next week. Some major state championship contenders lost and still others won, showing to keep an eye on them because the state tournament could get interesting fast. With district play beginning next week, teams are making final adjustments in preparation.GWAL
Thursday: West was given a score late by North, but was able to hold on for the 26-14 win. North scored its first offense touchdown of the season in the game. Southeast was up 42-6 at halftime against South and came away with the 48-6 win.
AVCTL
Hutchinson won a thriller at Gowans Stadium in Hutch as it downed Derby 31-28. There was a scary moment with less than a minute left in the game when Derby’s Conner Littleton went down for more than 10 minutes. It was reported, however, that he was speaking and moving his legs on the field. Maize continued its surprising season with a win over Campus 34-0. Salina South backed up its big win over Hutch last week with a 40-10 win against Newton. Salina Central took care of business against Andover Central 26-0.
Andover gave Goddard a 40-spot in a 40-16 rout of the Lions. Valley Center won its second game in a row with a 14-6 win over Goddard Eisenhower. McPherson appears to have righted the ship from its early-season woes as it took down Mulvane 35-30. Winfield gave Buhler about all it could handle in a 17-14 Crusader win. Rose Hill was too much for the Wildcats of El Dorado in a huge 52-21 win.
Andale doubled up on a struggling Wellington 60-30. Clearwater had no trouble with Circle in its 41-13 drubbing. Collegiate slid by Maize South 17-14. Augusta traveled to Ark City and left with a 49-0 loss.
CPL
It was the game of the year in Garden Plain as the Owls hosted Conway Springs and virtually everyone from both towns were in attendance for this one. For now, Garden Plain holds the bragging rights with a 41-21 win over the Cardinals.
Cheney led just 7-0 at halftime, but a huge second half propelled the Cardinals to a 43-15 win over Chaparral. Independent continued to find success on the field as it dominated Belle Plaine 55-20. Trinity did work against Douglass in a 42-14 win.
CKL
Kingman got another win on the season in a 29-28 squeaker. Hesston tried to get back to its winning ways with a 35-19 win over Pratt. Nickerson got yet another win heading into district play with a 38-21 win over Haven. Smoky Valley took care of business against Lyons 20-6. Hillsboro took down former 3A power Remington 42-0.
WAC
Great Bend nearly doubled up on the once mighty Liberal 37-20. Hays continued to win in a 52-31 game over Dodge City. Garden City took down a GWAL opponent in East 34-13.
NCKL
Concordia were three-touchdown winners over the Fighting Irish of Chapman 32-21. Wamego was too much for Clay Center to handle in a 35-12 loss for the Tigers. Despite Marysville putting up 28 points, Abilene scored 42 for the 42-28 win.
Others
Class 6A No. 2 Shawnee Mission East lost to No. 4 Lawrence Free State 28-0. SM East averaged 28 points per game heading into the contest. With the loss of No. 1 Derby at the hands of Hutchinson, the Salthawks may be looking at a top ranking again in the rankings.
Beloit continued to exhibit its high-powered offense, this time at the hands of Southeast of Saline as it won again 62-13. Oxford barely took down the Blue Devils of Sedan 26-24. Silver Lake won again, this time against Rossville 32-12. Pittsburg and Coffeyville put up a basketball score in Pittsburg’s 67-53 win. The Leopards of LaCrosse ran by Inman 56-13. Spearville and Deerfield played the definition of a shootout in an 82-54 Royal Lancer win.
