East golf starts well
The Wichita East boys' golf team has started out the season with a solid first two tournaments at Auburn Hills and Sim Park golf courses.

At the Bishop Carroll Invitational held at Auburn Hills, the Aces took 11th but showed promise for future tournaments with senior Kyle Charles shot an 82 closely followed by junior Blake Heiman with an 85.

"The Bishop Carroll Invitational is typically played in poor weather conditions at a tough course," said Heiman. "This year we were fortunate enough for it to be a nice day and I was able to score decently."

The Aces followed up the invitational with their first GWAL tournament held at Sim Park. The Aces’ top scorer was again Kyle Charles who shot an 82.

"The whole team seemed to struggle on Monday at Sim," said Heiman. "Golf if is a mental game and everybody has days like that. Your true colors show in the days after."

The team is back at MacDonald Park to practice this week before their next tournament at Clapp. The team will continue to focus on varied elements of their game, with intentional focus on their approaches and putting.

"For a lot of our guys it’s all in the head," said Heiman. "I honestly believe if we can keep our heads straight that there are three state bound golfers on our team and a fourth place finish in the City League."

The Aces’ next tournament of the season will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Apr. 17 at Clapp golf course.

"I played my best round of the year there last year," said Heiman. "I expect to play even better this year."
