Participants walk the first lap in the annual Relay for Life of Charlevoix County as a light rain falls Saturday in East Jordan's Community Park. The volunteer-driven American Cancer Society event helps raise funds for cancer research and for the Hope Lodge in Grand Rapids, which offers accommodations for cancer patients and caregivers visiting the area for treatment. Relay for Life also celebrates cancer survivors and serves to remember those who have died from the illness. The local program drew 17 teams this year. Teams help with fundraising and have members representing them on the walking course throughout the 24-hour event. As of Saturday, organizers were about halfway to their fundraising goal of $45,000, with donations to be accepted through the end of August.
