Torrential rain didn’t stop hundreds of women from coming out to participate in the inaugural Wichita Diva Dash 5K on Saturday, March 9, 2013. The fun ‘women-only’ race was held at 8:30 a.m. at The Waterfront, located at 13th Street and Webb Road.

Despite the rainy morning, many women ran the race with smiles, wearing brightly colored tutus, princess crowns, and feathery boas in the first annual race in which men are not allowed to participate.

The Diva Dash Women’s 5K was followed by a Lil’ Princess Kids Run, designed for young girls 8 and younger. The kids run included different running distances from 50 yards to 200 yards, based on the participant’s age.

Following the race, an awards ceremony was held for the top finishers, where food and beverages were provided. Prize money was awarded to the top 5 race finishers in the 5K. Prizes ranged from $50 to $400, depending on finishing times.

Proceeds from the event will help the nonprofit organization Girls on the Run. The charity provides an after-school program for girls in grades 3rd through 8th that addresses the healthy development of a girl’s social, mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.
