Fundraiser set to raise money for students who can't afford extracurricular activities

Back in March 2012, the community of Hesston lost a young man, Garrett Spencer in a tragic spring break skiing accident in Colorado. The community was hit hard by the accident, as Garrett was a football star, and a very active member of the church.

Garrett spent much of his time helping people on missions trips, among other things, as well as giving his own money to help fellow students with school supplies, football equipment, etc., to make sure that no friend or student be left out because they couldn't afford things.

In honor of those things that Garrett did to help those students, Garret's parents have started a non-profit foundation, called G51: Garrett Spencer Memorial Foundation, in order to give back to community and do what Garrett otherwise would have done to help those out.

The name of his foundation uses G, which was a nickname for Garrett, and #51 which was the jersey number that Garrett wore throughout his high school football career.

The foundation will give funding to students who can't afford extracurricular activities such as football equipment, band instruments, running shoes, you name it. The foundation also has hopes of setting up scholarship endowment funds to those in need.

The foundation is holding a groundbreaking, but hopefully 'annual' golf tournament at Hesston golf course.
