A Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet, Burlesque Performance, Midwest Beerfest, Renaissance Festival – Those are just a few of this week’s top events in Wichita.

Why you should go: Bryan Adams is bringing his 2012 Bare Bones Tour to the Orpheum’s stage this Friday night. The singer, whose career has spanned more than three decades, is best known for playing his rock n’ roll favorites, “Summer of 69,” “Somebody,” “Everything I Do,” “Run To You,” and “It’s Only Love.”

2)      Cocktails with Creatures

Why you should go: The Sedgwick County Zoo’s ‘Rediscover the Zoo’ provides several different fun classes, events, and programs for adults to learn more about the Zoo’s creatures. Each event is meant to teach you more facts about the Zoo and provide a way to meet new people.

One specific event that will take place this weekend is Cocktails with the Creatures. The “social hour” event will include a variety of different cocktails inspired by animals, which will be provided along your stroll throughout the Zoo’s pathways. Light snacks will also be provided. Must be 21 years or older.

 



 

3)      The Kinsey Sicks

Why you should go: The Kinsey Sicks, one of America’s favorite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartets, have hit the campaign trail and are making their way to Wichita to perform for the first time ever.

Just in time for election season, The Kinsey Sicks will perform their inaugural concert ‘Electile Dysfunction: The Kinsey Sicks for President’ on stage Century II’s Mary Jane Teall Theater. The concert features the ‘Dragapella Divas’ present views on political topics such as unemployment, immigration, education and scandal – all in quartet harmony.

The Kinsey Sicks is a quartet group that has been combing political satire, over-the-top drag and brilliant four-part harmony for eighteen years. They have performed in 41 states, toured worldwide, performed Off-Broadway in Las Vegas and New York’s Studio 54, and have been the subject of two feature films.

Proceeds from the concert will go towards benefitting the First Metropolitan Community Church.

 



 

4)      Dr. Dillinger’s Freaks & Floozies ‘Westward Ho’

Why you should go: Old Cowtown will be showcasing an evening of ‘naughty vaudeville & burlesque’ in the museum’s Empire House Live Theater. The new variety show ‘Westward Ho’ will showcase a group of performers who will explore burlesque, performance art and music. The show will also feature a variety of other performances, including balloon swallowing, contortionism, and fire eating (just to name a few).

 



 

5)      12th Annual Midwest Beerfest

Why you should go: The 12th Annual Midwest Beerfest is back and is bigger and better than ever! The 2012 beer festival features more than 350 handcrafted, imported and domestic brews – more than any other beer event in Wichita! Don’t drink beer? There will be plenty of non-alcoholic drinks as well.

Beginning on Friday, September 21, choose from three different venues for the festival’s ‘Beer & Food Lovers Beer Dinners.’ This year’s dinners will be served at the Wichita Marriott Hotel (food from Free State Brewery/Lawrence KS), Double Tree by Hilton Wichita Airport (food from Empyrean Brewing Company/Lincoln KE), and Larkspur Bistro and Bar (food from New Belgium Brewing Co./Fort Collins CO). The festival will continue on Saturday, September 22 with the Grand Tasting, located in Century II’s EXPO Hall. Participants will be allowed to sample several different kinds of high-end beers, while they bid on a ‘brew-lover’s’ silent auction.

Make sure to throw down an extra $5 for the popular “Midwest Wingfest” where you can sample a number of different wings prepared by local restaurants and chefs. The money raised will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at Via Chrisiti Health.

7)      5th Annual Rumble in Delano

Why you should go: The 5th Annual Rumble in Delano will take place along West Douglas, in the historic Delano District. The car show will feature traditional hot rods and kustom kulture cars, along with motorcycles. This is a great event for the whole family. And did we mention it’s also FREE?

What you expect to see at this year’s show: belly dancers, live music, burlesque, merchandise, and the 2012 Miss Rumble in Delano pin-up girl contest.

8)      Be in the KNOW About Bullying Pep Rally

Why you should go: The month of October is National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month and to raise local awareness on bullying the ‘Be in the KNOW Against Bullying Pep Rally’ will be held at Davis Moore Nissan this Saturday. Davis Moore, The Mattress Hub and KWCH have partnered together to form this six month campaign to help put an end to bullying.

The pep rally will include performances from local high school cheer squads, dance teams and jazz bands. There will also be a special appearance from Sean James (former Minnesota Viking and founder of Be in the Know About Bullying) and Mike Bell (former Kansas City Chief).

To take the pledge against bullying, students can do so on the day of the pep rally and receive a Be in the KNOW About Bullying wristband.
