WICHITA, Kan.—
Competing in the Pre-State Challenge, the Kapaun Mt. Carmel track team participated in events against 6-4A schools to earn Pre-State rankings. Senior Libby Weber said her expectations for the challenge were big.“This was the first really competitive meet Kapaun was in,” Weber said. “I knew I had been training hard, and I knew I could compete well.”
Also competing in the Elite division was senior Rachel Shearrer. She said she met her goal of placing in the top three in her only event, javelin, despite the colder weather.
“Thursday night’s weather was colder than the other meets I have been to so far, but I did well at the meet and was able to place third in Elite,” Shearrer said.
Weber said her biggest difficulty was her mindset. Although she placed third in the 300-meter hurdles, she said she was only .1 second behind the girl who placed second.
“I went into my race with the wrong mindset,” Weber said. “I just wanted a medal. If I would have gone in wanting to win and get first, I know I would have beaten her.”
Weber said she is confident that the team will continue to have a successful season because of its well-balanced variety of talents in all areas.
“With seniors alone we have an amazing and fun team, but what I think is more important is that we have great underclassmen who have shown how much potential they have,” Weber said. “This means that Kapaun will continue to have a great team.”
The next meet for the team is Friday at Campus, although some members will be competing at the KU Relays instead.
