If you do an internet search for "Petland," it won't be long before you find a review or comment accussing Petland of selling dogs from puppy mills. Of course, these comments come from people not associated with Petland, so we decided to go to the source. We asked Petland Wichita owner Brad Bockus, "Where do your puppies come from?"
Bockus is used to the question and the reviews online. "All the puppies sold at Petland in Wichita come from local, USDA and state-inspected breeders," he says. "We do not get ANY of our puppies from puppy mills."
In fact, Bockus says many of the breeders he buys from have their puppies born in their homes, and the parents are their much-loved pets. All of the breeders raise the puppies in a clean and spacious environment. Bockus gets puppies from breeders in Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.
"I personally check out breeders' facilities before we buy from them," Bockus explains.
To prove his point, Bockus showed us a large selection of photos of himself and puppies at several of his breeders' homes. All the photos show affectionate, clean puppies. Several of the puppies are inside with their parents, and many are outside in large play areas with toys and shelter.
Bockus explained that all Petlands are independently owned and operated. He thinks that might be why his store receives reviews about selling puppy mill dogs. If one store is accussed of selling puppy mill dogs, people assume every store does. This is absolutely not the case. Petland Wichita is dedicated to making sure all their puppies come from breeders that love their animals, and raise healthy, happy puppies. Petland, and Bockus, are against puppy mills and refuse to do business with them.
