Company supports military book-a-holics

Book-A-Holic is trying to give away 25,000 books this year to members of the military who are serving overseas.
Wichita’s largest seller of used books has been donating its wares to service members during the past three years through the website AnySoldier.com, which collects everything from trinkets to food for soldiers in harm’s way. So far this year, Book-A-Holic has shipped out 10,000 books, most of them from excess inventory it has collected at its stores.
The goal is to give away 25,000 books by the end of the year.
It is a passion of Book-A-Holic founder Dave Lovett, and for good reason. The Air Force veteran served in northern Iraq during Desert Storm.
“Ninety-nine percent of your time is just laying around and doing nothing. But 1 percent is real exciting,” he recalls.
So having something to do was precious. Lovett remembers pallets of books being dropped off for service members. Sometimes more than 100 guys would line up to pick up a few. Then they would share them.
Lovett read “Silence of the Lambs” that year and then passed it on. When he got the book back six months later, “it was tied together, all the pages were falling out, the binding was coming off,” he says. “Getting books was the highlight. You knew at least you would have something to do.”
