Verlin and Curt Pfannensteil
Fifty years ago, Verlin Pfannenstiel became part of the business now known as Heartland Building Center. Today, Pfannenstiel is still an integral part of the Hays business.
“It’s provided me with all the challenges and opportunities I’ve ever needed,” Pfannenstiel said.
Pfannenstiel began as a bookkeeper for Schwaller Lumber in 1962, and over the subsequent 50 years, he has stayed with the company, which he now owns, even staying on when he was attending Fort Hays State University.
Pfannenstiel became the sole owner of the business in 1988, when he changed the name to Heartland Building Center. He purchased 25 percent of the company in 1972, and became a 50-percent owner in 1981. He and his son Curt Pfannenstiel are now both 50-percent owners of the company; Curt Pfannenstiel, the president of Heartland Building Company who oversees its day-to-day operations, is the only of Verlin’s five children involved with Heartland Building Center.
“It’s a pleasure to learn from all that experience,” Curt Pfannenstiel said.
Heartland Building Center serves contractors and consumers throughout northwest and central Kansas with name-brand products and outstanding service at competitive prices. Among other products, Heartland offers cabinets, countertops, fireplaces and stoves, millwork, decking, roofing, siding, doors, hardware, tools, paint, garages, stone veneer, and windows.
Heartland Building Center currently has four locations. Its Hays location is at 2510 General Hays Road and is reachable at (785)625-6554. It is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
In Stockton, Heartland Building Center is at 918 S. Cedar St. and is reachable at (785)425-6715. The Stockton location is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Heartland’s Russell location is at 86 S. Fossil St. and is reachable at (785)483-2161. It is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Heartland’s truss plant is located at 710 General Custer Road in Hays and is reachable at (785)628-3442. The truss plant is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday.
